The England Family Foundation announced Friday a $1 million emergency fund to support thousands of D.C. residents who rely on SNAP benefits and federal workers who aren’t getting paid during the government shutdown.

The funds will be distributed to the non-profit organizations Bread for the City and Martha’s Table. It will help them expand grocery and holiday food distributions into the Thanksgiving season.

“Thousands of our neighbors are waking up unsure how they’ll provide for their families,” said George Jones, CEO of Bread for the City. “This is a real and urgent crisis.”

The donation will also fund direct cash giving, which will allow families to make choices that best suit their needs.

The organizations are calling on philanthropic partners, private-sector allies, and community members to join the effort.
