The House Intelligence Committee leader said on Wednesday he knew about a serious threat to national security and asked the administration to make the information public so the U.S. and its allies can talk about how to deal with it.
Rep. Mike Turner, a Republican from Ohio, did not say what the threat was in his statement. The White House did not say anything either.
House Speaker Mike Johnson said there was no reason to worry. He said he could not share the secret information. “But we want everyone to know we have things under control. We’re on it and there’s no need to panic,” he said to reporters at the Capitol.
Turner sent an email to Congress members earlier on Wednesday saying his committee found “an urgent issue with a foreign military power that could cause trouble” and that all Congress leaders should know about it. He told them to go to a SCIF, a safe place, to see the intelligence. He did not give any details again.
The Biden administration seemed surprised by Turner’s news.
Jake Sullivan, the national security adviser, said to reporters at the White House that he was already planning to talk to Turner and other top Congress leaders on Thursday. Sullivan did not say what he would talk about or anything else about Turner’s statement.
“I’m looking forward to meeting him and the other House members of the Gang of Eight, tomorrow,” Sullivan said. “And I can’t say anything more from here right now.”
He said it was not normal to have such a meeting.
“I’ll just say that I reached out to the Gang of Eight myself. It’s very rare for the national security adviser to do that,” Sullivan said. He said he did that earlier this week.
He did not say if the meeting was about Turner’s alert. “You can make whatever links you want,” he said to reporters.
Johnson said he asked the White House for a meeting with the president last month to talk about “the classified national security problem that is serious.” He said Sullivan’s meeting was because of his ask.
