An animal cruelty suspect shot and wounded three cops in D.C. this morning, and is still holed up in a house on Hanna Place Southeast.

Police Chief Pamela Smith said the gunman keeps firing from inside the home, where there may be dogs as well.

The three officers are in stable condition, and a fourth one was also injured but not by gunfire.

The standoff started around 9:20 a.m. when police tried to arrest the suspect for animal cruelty, NBC Washington reported.

The area is cordoned off and nearby schools are on lockdown, as authorities try to talk the suspect into surrendering.
