Police said a mom was killed and her toddler was trapped in a bedroom at a home in northeast Houston on Monday afternoon.
Houston police are investigating the scene at Fir Ridge Court near Kingwood, in the 24500 block.
The officers got another call for a welfare check at the same home around 12:45 p.m. The suspect’s daughter, who was with them, opened the front door.
They found two bedroom doors tied with string wire on the knobs. They heard faint cries from one of the doors.
They cut the wire and found a 2-year-old boy in the room. He seemed OK.
They took the boy to a safe place and broke into the other bedroom. That was where they saw the mother’s body.
The mother was in her 40s, Cantu said.
The suspect told his daughter on the phone that he was on his way to Louisiana and had “murdered his girlfriend,” Cantu said.
Police in Port Allen, near Baton Rouge, stopped him when he got to Louisiana. He took out a gun and shot himself dead, police said.
The 2-year-old boy is not the suspect’s son, Cantu said. He is in good shape after being taken to a local hospital.
The reason for the incident is unknown.
Cantu said, “This is a hard situation, we need prayers for the family. We are happy the child is fine, he is the only survivor in the house.”
