The Texas Republican Party said on Saturday that it has reprimanded Representative Dade Phelan, the leader of the Texas House.

The Party blamed the reprimand on “failure to uphold Republican values and goals.

The Party said it censured Rep. Phelan under Rule 44, which lets the party punish elected officials who break Republican Party of Texas values and goals three or more times in a biennium. The censure listed five violations by Rep. Phelan on issues like Ken Paxton’s impeachment, Democrat Committee Chairs, border security, and educational freedom.

The Party said the Jasper County Republican Party first passed the censure resolution with more than two-thirds support and it needed a three-fifths vote (39) to pass the 64-member State Republican Executive Committee. The final vote was 55 for, 4 against, and 4 abstentions.

The Party said Rep. Phelan is the fourth elected official ever to be censured by Rule 44.

A spokesperson for Rep. Phelan said this in response:

“This is the same group that welcomed a bunch of Neo-Nazis, did not cut ties with anti-Semitic groups and hesitated to denounce a known sex offender before he was kicked out of the Texas House. The SREC has no moral credibility and does not reflect the views of the Party overall.”
