Republicans failed to impeach Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Tuesday.

The vote was 214-216. Four Republicans joined all Democrats to vote no.

The vote was 215-215 for a while before another Republican changed to no.

Speaker Mike Johnson said the resolution failed and Democrats cheered.

Later, Johnson lost again when the House did not have enough votes to pass his bill to give money to Israel.

Johnson may try to impeach Mayorkas again. He told ABC News he would do it again when he left the chamber.

Rep. Blake Moore, R-Utah, asked to vote again after the impeachment failed. They may do it when Majority Leader Steve Scalise, who has cancer, can come.

The impeachment said Mayorkas did not follow the law and broke the public’s trust when more migrants crossed the border.

The DHS said the impeachment was wrong and should not have happened.

“House Republicans should stop playing politics and help the Senate pass the national security deal to get DHS what it needs to protect the border. Secretary Mayorkas is working with both parties to find real solutions for the border and keep our country safe,” DHS spokesperson Mia Ehrenberg said.

The White House also said the impeachment was wrong.

“Both parties agree that this impeachment is wrong and against the Constitution. House Republicans should see that this is a waste of time and work with the President, Secretary Mayorkas, and both parties to make the border more secure,” White House spokesperson Ian Sams said.

Mayorkas said he and the department did nothing wrong and the impeachment would not stop their work. Democrats said the impeachment was wrong and political.

People wondered if Johnson had enough votes to impeach Mayorkas. Republicans only have three more votes than Democrats in the House, and two Republicans said they would not impeach Mayorkas.

The Republicans who voted no were Reps. Ken Buck of Colorado, Tom McClintock of California and Mike Gallagher of Wisconsin.

House Democrat leader Hakeem Jeffries, D-N.Y., said the Republicans wanted to impeach Mayorkas because they were angry at Democrats for impeaching Donald Trump twice.

He said, “Extreme MAGA Republicans do whatever Donald Trump, the puppet master, tells them to do.”

Rep. Jim McGovern, D-Mass., slammed Republicans for impeaching Mayorkas and blocking the border bill when the House Rules Committee met on Monday.

He said, “How can you say this is about the border when you won’t work with Democrats on the border? You just want to do this baseless, extreme, unconstitutional impeachment. It’s unbelievable.”

House Rules Committee Chair Tom Cole, R-Okla., said Mayorkas caused the border crisis and the vote was for “accountability.”

He said, “Secretary Mayorkas broke his oath of office. If he won’t do his job, the House has to do its constitutional job,” Cole said at the markup.

The White House said on Monday the impeachment was “unprecedented and unconstitutional.”

They said, “Impeaching Secretary Mayorkas would make this serious constitutional power less important and lead to more partisan misuse of this power later. It would not help us secure our borders, or give us the money the President asked for more Border Patrol agents, immigration judges, and tools to stop fentanyl at the border.
