Olympic gymnast Gabby Douglas makes a comeback after eight years.

She announced that she will compete at the Winter Cup on Feb. 24, her first elite gymnastics competition since 2016. She was motivated by the 2022 championships, where she realized how much she missed competing.

“I’m still a competitor at heart,” Gabby told NBC News’ Hallie Jackson Now on Feb. 6.

She started training right away, hoping to win another gold medal. She never formally retired from the sport, but she needed a break in 2016 to work on herself and her mental state.

Gabby was dissatisfied with how she ended her career in 2016.

“I love this sport and I never wanted to walk away on a bad day. I want to make sure I really give it my all and end on a good note.”

and that means setting her sights on the Paris Olympics later this year.

“I would just love to go back out there and represent Team U.S.A. just one more time,” Gabby said. “Just to have that feeling of being part of something—being part of a team again—would be a huge honor.”

Should she make it through the Olympic trials, the upcoming sporting event will be her third Summer Games.

Gabby and her “Fierce Five” teammates McKayla Maroney, Aly Raisman, Kyla Ross and Jordyn Wieber won gold in both the all-around and team events at the 2012 London Olympics. She came back to the Olympics in 2016 at Rio de Janeiro, where she and her team of Aly, Simone Biles, Laurie Hernandez and Madison Kocian earned another gold.

She announced her return to gymnastics on Instagram on Feb. 6. “What a journey so far,” she said. “It has been a bumpy ride, but I’m not done testing myself. I want to make every moment count! I can’t wait to be back on the competition floor and enjoy this sport that I adored since I was a little girl. Here’s to never giving up on our dreams.”
