House Republicans planned on ousting Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on Sunday, charging him with “deliberate and systematic refusal to follow the law” and “breach of public trust.”
House Homeland Security Chairman Mark Green, R-Tenn., said in a statement that the articles show a clear, strong, and undeniable case for Mayorkas’ impeachment.
The Department of Homeland Security says no serious crimes or wrongdoing have happened under the Biden administration and the House investigation led by the GOP is “baseless.”
Administration officials cite many legal experts, some presented by the committee, who say the impeachment does not meet the constitutional requirements.
The committee will review the new impeachment articles on Tuesday and then the full chamber will need to approve them to send Mayorkas to the Senate for a trial and possible removal.
House Speaker Mike Johnson said on Friday that the vote will happen “as soon as possible.”
