US embassy warns travellers to stay away from Bahamas after 18 killings in a month.
Bahamas saw a spike in violence in January, mostly due to gang clashes, posing a threat to tourist safety.
US officials urged people not to resist robbery attempts and asked travellers to rethink their Caribbean vacation plans.
The embassy said in a statement that 18 murders happened in Nassau in 2024, at any time of the day, on the streets. Gang revenge was the main reason for the murders.
US officials urge visitors to be vigilant at night and keep a low profile. They also warn against resisting robbers and advise staying alert.
Travellers should revise their security plans due to the rising violence in the area.
Prime Minister of The Bahamas Philip Davis revealed measures to deal with the violence spike, such as roadblocks and secret police operations, according to the Nassau Guardian.
Davis said, “This might cause you to be late for your meetings, or postpone your plans, but it is worth it for the common good of having safer streets and less violent crime affecting our lives.”
The officials also expressed concern about unregulated water activities and cautioned that they might not have adequate safety precautions.
Jamaica received a level three travel advisory from the State Department, meaning travellers should rethink their plans. The department said violent crimes like home invasions, armed robberies, sexual assaults, and homicides were frequent in Jamaica.
The statement also warned that sexual assaults happened often, even at all-inclusive resorts. Travellers should be careful and reconsider their visit to Jamaica.
