“A large building was “at risk of collapsing”, according to Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service (MFRS).

Firefighters said a four-storey building that was 100 metres by 50 metres was “fully ablaze”.

Social media images showed heavy smoke over the city center.

Firefighters were called to Fox Street shortly after 2pm on Saturday and sent 12 fire engines and two aerial appliances.

“The building is at risk of collapsing and fire crews are clearing buildings,” MFRS said.

People were told to stay away from the area, while those close by were urged to shut windows and doors.

Police helped to clear the building, while roads were closed and a cordon was set up.

No one was reported to be hurt.

MFRS said on Saturday evening that the situation was under control.

“The fire has been significantly lowered, with the main part of the fire put out,” it said.

MFRS later said that crews were still handling “warm areas and minor fires”.

Residents near the area could go back to their homes.
