A grand jury in Oklahoma County dropped the charges against an officer who shot and killed someone in the city. The jury met on January 18 to discuss the case of Azjaynee Owens-Bey, who died, and the Oklahoma City Police Department. Officials said the jury listened to two witnesses and saw 37 exhibits, which had evidence like body-worn camera video from police, surveillance video, and interviews of witnesses.

The grand jury decided that a use-of-force expert was not needed or helpful for their decision on this case. The grand jury also decided that the officer from the Oklahoma City Police Department was not guilty. On November 9, Owens-Bey, who had a gun, aimed it at several people at 1316 NE 12th Street and then at the officers who came.

The Oklahoma City Police Department (OKCPD) said MSgt. Daniel Higginbottom shot at the suspect before the suspect hid. OKCPD said the suspect, who was Azjaynee Owens-Bey, shot his gun at the officers and dropped it. The officers told Owens-Bey not to pick up the gun again, but he did, and MSgt. shot him several times. Owens-Bey died there.

OKCPD showed a video of what happened, which had the moments before and after the officers got to the place of a domestic fight. Owens-Bey can be seen taking someone in the elevator and pointing the gun at them before leaving the elevator and pointing it at different people inside and outside the building.

Owens-Bey had the gun in the parking lot when the officers arrived, but he did not obey their orders to drop it. He aimed the gun at them and returned to the building. The officers followed him inside. Owens-Bey kept pointing his gun at the officers until one of them shot at him, but the bullets missed him and hit a wall.

Owens-Bey shot back at one of the officers and took cover behind a vending machine. He threw his gun on the floor and the officers told him not to touch it, but he tried to pick it up. MSgt. Higginbottom then shot him several times and killed him.
