Officials report that two lives were lost and three survivors were pulled from a capsized boat in the frigid waters along Alaska’s coast.
A distress call alerted the U.S. Coast Guard and other agencies to the overturned vessel near Chichagof Island in southern Alaska. They arrived at the scene around 4:48 p.m. local time on Tuesday evening, the U.S. Coast Guard said in a statement.
Authorities reported that the weather on scene was “8-10 knot winds, 9 ft. seas, water temperature at 44 degrees, and air temperature at 31 degrees.”
“A helicopter crew from Air Station Sitka took off to help and reached the scene at 5:15 p.m. They pulled the three survivors from the water at 5:50 p.m,” authorities said. “Two Coast Guard Cutters and a plane from Air Station Kodiak also joined the rescue operation Tuesday night, followed the boat’s drift, and looked for the two people who were still missing near the capsized vessel. Air Station Sitka continued the search Tuesday night and Wednesday morning.”
Officials said that the Sitka Fire Department came to the scene with Alaska Wildlife Troopers on Wednesday afternoon and used an unmanned underwater drone to locate the two dead people in the vessel’s cabin.
“We were saddened to hear about the two people in the cabin from our Sitka Fire Department partners,” said Coast Guard Capt. Darwin Jensen, the leader of Sector Southeast Alaska. “We offer our sympathy and strength to the family members at this time and thank our partner agencies for their help in this case.
Officials from the U.S. Coast Guard said that they will start recovering the bodies of the dead people when the conditions on the scene get better, and they have not revealed their names yet.
The probe into the incident is still in progress
