Authorities said a man who reached for a gun when a Houston police officer told him to exit his vehicle in northeast Houston was shot and charged.
Broderick Rax, 39, faces charges of having a gun illegally as a felon and having a controlled substance. Rax, who is in stable condition in the hospital with a gunshot wound, does not have a booking photo available yet.
While patrolling the 8400 block of Tidwell Road in a marked police vehicle, HPD officers saw a black Lincoln sedan parked on the side of a business with clear “No Trespassing” signs. Police said the vehicle stayed there for a while and the officers started a trespassing investigation.
Investigators said the officers in uniform went to the driver’s side of the Lincoln and saw a man, later named as Rax, in the front driver’s seat. Officers told Rax they were doing an investigation and that his vehicle had a strong marijuana smell.
Officers told the suspect to get out of the vehicle but he did not obey. Rax kept resisting orders as officers tried to pull him out of the vehicle, investigators said. Officers said they saw a gun on the floorboard by the driver’s side, near Rax. Officers Tased the suspect to arrest him but the Tasers did not work.
The struggle went on, and an officer saw the suspect go for the gun. Then, one officer, named Officer G. Chappell, shot his weapon at Rax, hitting him once. The suspect ran out of the vehicle and into the business, where officers caught him.
