On Sunday, the Oklahoma City Thunder kicked off their 16th season of ‘holiday assist’ by hosting an early Thanksgiving dinner for 15 military families.

Christine Berney, the Thunder’s vice president of community and engagement, said the Thunder’s goal is to bring joy and unity to families during the holidays.

“That’s what we’re here for,” said Berney.

The military families enjoyed a festive meal with the Thunder players, who expressed their gratitude and appreciation for their service.

“They are the real heroes,” said Berney.

At Tinker Elementary School, where the event took place, principal Suzanna Bennett-Asfaw said about 123 of her students have parents who are active duty.

“We randomly selected the names from a hat,” said Bennett-Asfaw.

One of the lucky students was Joel Schrock, whose dad has been in the Air Force for 15 years.

“It’s an honor to have someone in your family who serves your country,” said Schrock.

But his dad, Joe Schrock, said that service also comes with sacrifices.

“It’s hard to balance family life and military life, especially when you have to leave again,” said Joe Schrock.

Thunder player Jalen Williams could relate to that feeling, as both of his parents were in the military.

“It’s nice to come back and remember where you came from,” said Williams. “We should always remember our veterans.”
