Authorities said Sunday that a New York landlord who allegedly set a building on fire with his tenants inside was arrested a month after the incident.
The Fire Department of the City of New York said Rafiqul Islam set fire to the stairs of the Brooklyn home on Sept. 26. FDNY officials said Islam was upset that his second-floor tenants did not pay rent and did not leave.
Officials said Islam set the fire while two adults and six children were in the home.
According to the FDNY, all eight people escaped the fire.
Authorities said Islam, a New York landlord, threatened to turn off his tenant’s utilities and set the house on fire if they did not pay rent.
They said a video captured a masked and hooded man entering and exiting the house before the 911 call. Officials said they found another video that confirmed Islam was the man in the mask.
The FDNY said, “Marshals searched for four weeks through many videos to identify the suspect until they finally saw Islam without his hood and mask.”
On Oct. 26, Islam was arrested and faced several charges, including eight counts of attempted murder, assault and arson.
