A Palestinian truck driver killed one Israeli soldier and wounded two others in a ramming attack at a checkpoint between Israel and the West Bank, Israeli police and medical officials said.
The attack took place at the Maccabim checkpoint, also known as Beit Sira by Palestinians, on Thursday. The driver fled the scene right away, but was stopped at another checkpoint about 4 miles away where he was shot and killed.
The Israeli army said the driver was “stopped”.
Israel’s Defence Minister Yoav Gallant expressed his sympathy to the family of the soldier who died and praised the security forces “for their quick action” in killing the attacker.
An Israeli police commander said the driver was a 41-year-old Palestinian who had a permit to work in Israel.
A video on social media showed a white truck surrounded by security guards at the second checkpoint as shots were fired.
The checkpoint where the truck hit the soldiers is on a main highway that goes from central Israel through the West Bank and into Jerusalem and is near the Israeli city of Modiin. The checkpoint is usually crowded with commuters and security guards or soldiers.
The incident happened a day after an off-duty police officer shot and killed a 15-year-old Palestinian teenager who stabbed and injured an Israeli settler at a light-rail station in East Jerusalem, which is occupied by Israel.
On Thursday night, four Israeli soldiers were hurt by a bomb as they guarded and escorted Jewish settlers to Joseph’s Tomb in Nablus, a city in the West Bank that is occupied by Israel. The site is a source of conflict that has often seen protests by Palestinians.
Israel has stepped up its raids in the West Bank almost every night since early last year, and attacks by Israeli settlers on Palestinian towns and villages have risen.
