The Oklahoma City Police Athletic League has a new Thunder community basketball court with fresh art, thanks to the Oklahoma City Thunder and OG&E. The court was revealed last Saturday, along with a multiyear plan to revamp and renew other Thunder community courts across Oklahoma.
The Thunder community courts are vital for youth programs and local communities, as they provide a safe and fun place to play basketball and learn life skills. The courts have been around for about 10 years, since the Thunder’s first season in Oklahoma. Now, as the Thunder enters its 16th season, the team and OG&E want to make sure the courts are well-maintained and updated for future generations.
The new court at the Oklahoma City Police Athletic League features a colorful mural by local artist Dusty Gilpin, who also designed the Thunder’s City Edition uniforms. The mural depicts the Thunder logo, the OKC skyline, and the words “Thunder Up”. The court also has new hoops, backboards, and rims.
The Oklahoma City Police Athletic League is a nonprofit organization that partners with the Oklahoma City Police Department to offer sports and mentoring programs for at-risk youth. The new court will enhance their mission of building positive relationships between the police and the community.
The Thunder and OG&E plan to unveil more refurbished courts in the coming months, as part of their commitment to support basketball and youth development in Oklahoma. They also encourage fans to visit the courts and share their experiences on social media using #ThunderCares.
