Miami Mayor Francis Suarez has announced his candidacy for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, joining a crowded field of contenders that includes former President Donald Trump and Florida Governor Ron DeSantis.
Suarez, who is serving his second term as the leader of Florida’s second-largest city, is the first Hispanic candidate to enter the race this cycle. He is running on a platform of attracting tech businesses to Florida, reducing crime and addressing climate change.
He also claims to be a “unifier” who can appeal to moderates and independents with his bipartisan record. Suarez faces an uphill battle against Trump and DeSantis, who have far more name recognition and support among the Republican base.
He has also been criticized for his ties to a development company that pays him $10,000 a month and is under investigation by the county’s ethics commission.
Suarez has denied any wrongdoing and said he is confident that he can overcome the challenges and present a positive vision for the country.
