The rapper Kanye West is being sued for assault by a photographer who says he smashed her cell phone in a clash, she announced Thursday.

The rapper Ye, formerly known as Kanye West, is being sued by a photographer who says he threw her phone and hurt her emotionally in a January incident.

The photographer, Nichol Lechmanik, said at a press conference in Los Angeles that she was outside a sports center in Ventura County, where Ye and Kim Kardashian’s son was playing. She said she took pictures of Kardashian and then filmed Ye arguing with someone from her car.

The video, shown to reporters, shows Ye coming to her car and telling her to stop with her cameras. Lechmanik says he is a celebrity, but he grabs her phone and tosses it before leaving.

Lechmanik said she was scared by his actions and they affected her work. She said she had the same right to work as Ye and he had no right to assault or batter her.

Her lawyer, Gloria Allred, said the lawsuit in Ventura County seeks damages, but did not say how much.

Paparazzi and celebrities often clash in Los Angeles, with stars saying they are harassed and photographers saying they need candid shots to survive in a tough market.
