Tesla’s Chief Executive Officer Elon Musk ended his two-day China trip on Thursday, following talks with high-ranking Chinese government officials, including the Vice Premier. His private jet was then seen heading to Austin, Texas, the location of Tesla’s global headquarters.
Musk also toured Tesla’s Shanghai factory during his trip, which is the biggest production site for the company worldwide. Tesla released photos and a video of Musk holding a “Giga Shanghai” sign, with hundreds of employees around him, including Tom Zhu, the global manufacturing chief.
Musk praised the employees in the video for their resilience in facing various difficulties caused by supply chain issues and the pandemic. He also formed a heart sign with his hands, expressing gratitude for their efforts.

- Before touring the Shanghai factory, Musk met with China’s foreign, commerce, and industry ministers in Beijing. He also had dinner with the chairman of CATL, Tesla’s biggest battery supplier.
Musk’s meeting with China’s Vice Premier was a rare event A notable highlight of Musk’s trip was his meeting with Chinese Vice Premier Ding Xuexiang, who ranks sixth in China’s top leadership. This was the first time Ding met with a foreign CEO one-on-one, showing how much China values its ties with Tesla and Elon Musk. In 2019, Musk met with then-Premier Li Keqiang.
Musk also met with Chen Jining, the communist party chief of Shanghai. The city government said on Thursday that Chen invited Tesla to grow its investments and business activities in the city.
The industry ministry said that Musk talked about electric vehicles and connected car development with Chinese government officials, but did not reveal more details. The commerce ministry also said that Musk discussed Tesla’s achievements in China with the minister.
Musk stayed away from Twitter while in China Another unusual thing about Musk’s visit to China was his lack of tweets. Musk is known for being active on Twitter, but he did not tweet since he came to China. This was his longest break from Twitter since June 2022 when he bought Twitter.
It should be noted that Twitter and Facebook are blocked in China, but they can be reached through VPNs.
