Ukraine’s parliament passed sanctions against Iran on Monday, accusing it of arming Russia during its invasion of Ukraine that has lasted over a year. The move came after Kyiv faced the biggest drone attack from Russia using Iranian Shahed drones since the conflict started.

Ukraine’s parliament said on its website that it passed a resolution to align its sanctions with the rest of the civilized world and isolate Iran completely. The sanctions include banning exports of military and dual-use goods to Iran, suspending economic and financial obligations for Iranian residents, blocking Iranian goods and planes from passing through Ukraine, and imposing trade, financial and technology sanctions on Iran and its people.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who proposed the bill himself, will sign it into law soon. He asked Iranians last week why they wanted to help Russian terror. Iran’s foreign ministry spokesman Nasser Kanani dismissed Zelensky’s remarks as a political show with no value. He said Iran had sold drones to Russia months before the war in Ukraine began in February 2022 and accused Ukraine of making empty claims against Iran to get more arms and money from Western countries.
